Carl Grimes Played by Chandler Riggs
Carl flees his small town with his mom, Lori, and his dad's best friend Shane. He is a kind boy — inquisitive and intelligent — but quiet, struggling to maintain his innocence and cope with loss.
In Rick's absence Carl bonds with Shane, who becomes a surrogate father figure for him. In that role, Shane teaches Carl how to tie knots and regales him with promises of catching frogs to cook Cajun-style frog's legs.
Carl worships his father as well, and believes Rick to be indestructible. When Rick turns up alive only to leave camp the next day for Atlanta, it is Carl who comforts his mom: "Everything that's happened to him so far," Carl assures Lori. "Nothing's killed him yet."
Rick's absence when the camp is attacked by walkers, however, shakes Carl's confidence. "Are we safe now, Dad?" he asks, "Now that we're together?" Rick promises his son that he won't leave again.
Carl's closest friend in camp is Sophia, Carol's daughter, as well as the Morales children, all of whom he regularly plays with. When the group leaves for the CDC, however, Morales opts to take his family elsewhere and Carl must say good-bye to even more people he cares about.
