Rick Felder is Sarah Linden's former fiancé and psychiatrist. Deeply in love with Sarah, Rick is anxious to create a new life with her and her son Jack in Sonoma, California. On the morning of what's supposed to be her last day on the Seattle police force, Rick flies to California to set up their new home and continue planning their wedding, but after discovering Rosie's body, Sarah doesn't join him that evening as planned. Rick takes the delay in stride but becomes increasingly uneasy as Sarah continues to remain in Seattle.

As Sarah’s psychiatrist, Rick has the sole authority to arrange her early release when she’s wrongfully committed to a psych ward. After Rick authorizes her release, he tells Holder that he will no longer be responsible for Sarah.
